Like their tank forces, Iraqi mechanised infantry doctrine followed the organisation, methods, and tactics of the Soviet motor rifle units. Soviet advisers in the 1970s had drilled and educated the officer corps on Soviet combined arms tactics. With the withdrawal of the Soviet advisers in 1978, the Iraqi Ground Force was unwilling to innovate with too many new Western ideas. Saddam ruled over them with an iron fist and initiative was discouraged.

French advisers and technicians instituted equipment specific training. However, the mechanised forces of the Iraqi Ground Forces remained fundamentally in the Soviet sphere in their doctrinal and tactical outlook.

The better equipped battalions were mounted in BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles. These sturdy Soviet tracked infantry carriers are also addtionally armed with a 73mm gun, an anti-tank guided missile and a machine-gun to give the dismounted Iraqi mechanised infantry plenty of fire support. Iraqi wheeled mechanized forces used the BTR-60 eight-wheeled
armoured personnel carrier. The Iraqis also purchased Czechoslovak OT-64, a vehicle with similar capabilities. Some units were upgraded with French tracked AMX-10P infantry fighting vehicles.

An Iraqi mechanized company was a true combined arms force with infantry, machinegun, anti-tank, and anti-air capability. As well as the BMPs, the infantry were equipped with AK-47 assault rifles and RPG-7 anti-tank rockets, making them mobile and dangerous.
